MLA Kartar Tanwar: Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goyal has cancelled the membership of Chhatarpur MLA Kartar Tanwar under the anti-defection law. Kartar Tanwar, who won the 2020 assembly elections from Chhatarpur in Delhi on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket, later switched to the BJP.
The cancellation of his membership was officially announced on Tuesday by the Delhi Assembly Secretariat. This action comes after former Delhi minister Raj Kumar Anand also left the AAP and had his membership cancelled. Tanwar's membership has been cancelled from July 10, as per the notice issued by the Assembly Secretariat.
Who is Kartar Singh Tanwar?
Kartar Singh Tanwar started his political career in 2007 after working as a junior engineer in the Delhi Jal Board. He was initially part of the BJP before joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2014. Tanwar served as a councillor of the Delhi Municipal Corporation and gained attention during the protest against the mass transfer policy of teachers by the Delhi government. He won the Chhattarpur constituency in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections on the AAP's election symbol. However, in July of this year, he left the AAP and rejoined the BJP.
Owner of property worth crores
In the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, it was disclosed that Tanwar's total assets amount to Rs 17.64 crore. This figure encompasses immovable assets valued at Rs 7.69 crore and movable assets valued at Rs 9.95 crore. However, a significant revelation came to light when the Income Tax Department conducted a raid on his residence in 2016. The raid uncovered benami assets totalling Rs 130 crore, casting a shadow over Tanwar's financial dealings. The scale of the investigation was substantial, involving over 100 officers of the Income Tax Department who conducted searches at numerous locations associated with Tanwar. Additionally, the raid led to the discovery of 20 companies linked to Tanwar. Notably, a substantial amount of jewellery and cash worth crores was seized from his residence during the operation.
