Dussehra holds significant cultural and religious importance as it symbolizes the victory of righteousness over malevolence. This joyous festival is observed on the Dashami date of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin according to the Hindu lunar calendar. It is a time when people come together to commemorate the triumph of good over evil and to partake in various traditional rituals and celebrations. The holy festival of Dussehra is celebrated on the Dashami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashwin. Ravan Dahan Muhurat (Dussehra 2024 Ravan Dahan Muhurat)

Today, Dashami Tithi, the tenth day in the lunar calendar, began on 12th October at 10:58 am and will come to an end on 13th October at 09:08 am. It is considered an auspicious time to observe Ravana Dahan, the symbolic burning of Ravana's effigy, which will occur from 5:53 pm to 7:27 pm today as part of the Dussehra celebrations.

Dussehra Puja Vidhi

On the occasion of Dussehra, it is customary to begin the day by waking up early and performing a purifying bath. Following this, an idol of Dussehra is traditionally crafted using wheat or lime. Subsequently, nine balls, known as kandas, are formed from cow dung and adorned with barley and curd. Many individuals also offer barley on Lord Ram's tableau, and in several regions, young boys wear barley on their ears.

Further customs involve the creation of two bowls from cow dung, with one bowl being filled with coins and the other containing roli, rice, fruits, flowers, and barley. Offerings of bananas, radish, cluster beans, jaggery, and rice are made to the idol, followed by the lighting of incense sticks and lamps in its presence. On this auspicious day, it is common for people to also venerate their financial ledgers, and thus, similar offerings of barley and roli are made on them. Acts of charity are encouraged, such as providing food to Brahmins and those in need, as well as making donations according to one's means. Following the symbolic burning of the effigy of Ravana, seeking blessings from the elders of the household is regarded as a fitting conclusion to the day's observances.

On the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, the following rituals are traditionally observed:

1. Clean and perform ceremonial worship of the weapons present in your household as part of the weapon worship custom on this day.

2. Recite the 108 names of Lord Ram to awaken dormant fortune in your life.

3. To achieve progress and success in your career, dye a white thread with saffron colour, chant the 'Om Namo Narayan' mantra 108 times, and keep it with you after the puja.

4. For economic prosperity, facing the south direction, light a sesame oil lamp in front of Hanuman ji on Dussehra day and recite Sunderkand. This practice is believed to dispel negative energies from your life.
