RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: After holding high-level talks with protesting doctors, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she has decided to remove two health officials of the state and the Kolkata Police Commissioner along with another police officer. Addressing the public after the crucial meeting, the Bengal Chief Minister said that all the demands of the students could not be met in the midnight meeting. But she has decided to remove two top health officials from their posts. The CM said that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, Director of Health Services and Director of Medical Education will be removed from their posts.

After the meeting with the doctors, Mamata Banerjee said that the talks were successful. About 99 percent of their (doctors) demands have been accepted. After the meeting held at her residence on the RG Kar Hospital issue, Chief Minister Banerjee told reporters that the name of the new Kolkata Police Commissioner will be announced after 4 pm on Tuesday (September 17).

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also urged doctors to return to work. She said, “No punitive action will be taken against doctors... I request them to return to work as common people are getting affected.”

Doctors' protest continues

After meeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, the protesting trainee doctors in Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital case said that the strike and protest will continue until their demands are met. The protesting doctors said that the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal is our moral victory.

One of the agitating doctors said, “We will stop our work and continue our protest at Swasthya Bhawan (health department headquarters) until the promises made by the chief minister are fulfilled. We are also waiting for the Supreme Court hearing on Tuesday regarding the RG Kar rape-murder case.”

The trainee doctors said that they will hold a meeting after the hearing on Tuesday. During this, they will decide on their 'stoppage of work' and further protest. The doctors were addressing the media at 'Swasthya Bhavan' after returning from Banerjee's Kalighat residence. A meeting was held between the Chief Minister and a delegation of doctors at Banerjee's Kalighat residence.

Earlier, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday night accepted the demands of the agitating junior doctors and announced that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, Director of Health Services and Director of Medical Education would be removed from their posts.

The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, following which protests broke out across the country. Kolkata Police civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy was arrested in connection with the case. Currently, the case is being investigated by the CBI.
